Wildlife Report 2014 In Review

In 2014 we enjoyed another great season at Sailcone’s Grizzly Bear Lodge. Grizzly Bear and whale sightings were excellent and once again we had wonderful weather throughout our season. Wildlife sightings can not be guaranteed, however we are proud to say that once again all of our guests were able to view both Grizzly Bears and Whales.

The bear viewing in Knight Inlet was great right from spring until October. This season we saw another large run of pink salmon enter the river and many of them showed up earlier than usual. We did have some unusually hot and dry weather in August and September which caused the river to be very low for a long period of time. The bears enjoyed this as it made the fish much easier to catch. Luckily for the salmon we did receive some late September rain which raised the river and allowed good numbers of salmon to spawn.

It was also a great year for marine mammals in both Knight Inlet and Johnstone Strait. The resident (fish eating) Orca showed up in early July and were around until the end of September feasting on salmon. We were also able to view the transient (mammal eating) Orca on occasion throughout the year. The Humpback Whales were amazing once again and were very abundant throughout the entire season. In addition White Sided Dolphins, Stellar Sea Lions and Porpoise were common sightings. For the avid birders there was plenty to view as well. Bald Eagle, Belted Kingfisher, Marbled Murrelets, Rhinoceros Auklets, Pigeon Guillemots, Storm Petrels, Surf Scoters, and Osprey to name a few.

Our guides and cook (Glen, George and Madeline) will all be back again in 2015. We look forward to another great season and hopefully we will see many of you in the coming season. Angus.
