About Grizzly Bear Tours & Orca Safari

Grizzly Bear Lodge offers grizzly bear tours in Knight Inlet, where we are one of the few premier Grizzly Bear Tours and Safari Lodges in North America. One can expect to get very close and almost personal with Grizzly bears, Sea Lions, Seals, Humpback Whales, Orcas, Eagles and Black Bears, all from safe viewing situations. The lodge is located on British Columbia's mainland coast, northeast of Campbell River BC and is part of the Great Bear Rainforest.

Seven features make Grizzly Bear Lodge, is a Premier Grizzly Bear Tour And Safari Company
unique and worthy of your consideration.

  1. Grizzly Bear Lodge Tours and Safari is one of only two grizzly bear tour operators licensed to view grizzly bears upriver from Knight Inlet. This provides our guests with a rare opportunity to watch the grizzly bears up close feeding on salmon. Photographers and camera buffs can get close up to view bears fishing and interacting. Viewing stands available late August to mid October.
  2. Grizzly Bear Lodge is located in the middle of BC's Rainforest Coast on Knight Inlet, Canada's longest fjord. The scenery is spectacular and so is the grizzly bear viewing.
  3. Grizzly Bear Lodge is small and intimate, assuring personal service and attention to your needs and expectations. We only accommodate 8 to 10 guests at a time.
  4. Grizzly Bear Lodge is very remote so access is by seaplane only.
  5. The remote environment, climate, the spawning rivers that flow into Knight Inlet and the natural protection provided by the mountains, forest and the Knight Inlet Fjord, cause the area to attract and concentrate the most diverse and abundant wildlife available in North America.
  6. After a day of exciting and rewarding grizzly bear tours, we serve gourmet dinners to our guests. Visit Grizzly Bear Safari for grizzly tours and whale watching details.
  7. This great bear adventure is offered at a reasonable price. Please compare.

Wildlife Report 2013 In Review

2013 was another strong year at Sailcone’s Grizzly Bear Lodge with all of our guests finding both Grizzly Bears and whales.  The Grizzly Bears were strong right from the spring until the end of our season.  Another good run of Pink salmon beginning in mid July gave the bears plenty of much needed protein to make it through the long winter.  It also gave us some great opportunities to view these bears feeding on the salmon as they journeyed upstream.  The viewing platforms were excellent again, but we also had some spectacular viewing by boat in the lower section of the river.  This made for some great days viewing bears from the platform in the morning and then by boat in the afternoon.  Our spring viewing was also excellent.  June is an often an underrated month to view these bears in my opinion.  June is right in the middle of the mating season so there is a good chance of seeing some interesting interactions between the different bears.  At this time the bears are just getting up from hibernation and they head out to the river estuary quickly to feed on the sedge grass which is full of protein in the spring.  It is also our slower season, so you often have the lodge all to yourself.  In addition to Grizzly Bears Knight Inlet is home to many Black Bears which we saw frequently on our travels, especially at low tide when they come down to feed on shore crabs and mussels.

On the whale side 2013 was another fantastic season.  The resident Orca arrived in early July and were viewed frequently until the end of September.  We also viewed transient (marine mammal eating) Orca on a number of trips right from June until mid October.  Perhaps the greatest marine success story for the last several years has been the huge number of Humpback Whales returning to feed in our area.  All of our groups were able to view these whales and many were treated to some spectacular shows.  Pacific White Sided Dolphins, Stellar Sea Lions, Porpoise, and seals were also seen frequently.  Birds are abundant with many Bald Eagles, Blue Herons, Belted Kingfishers, Marbled Murrelets, and Rino Auklets just to name a few.

We are looking forward to another great season in 2014.  Our guides average over 15 years experience in the area and will all be returning for the upcoming season.  Hope to see you during our 2014 season.
